Note: REGISTRATION FOR THE TAKE ME OUTSIDE FOR LEARNING CHALLENGE 2021/22 IS NOW OPEN

The Take Me Outside for Learning Challenge is a commitment to ongoing outdoor learning throughout the school year, which involves taking your class outside once a week. For teachers who sign up for the Learning Challenge, they are provided monthly professional development opportunities, resources and outdoor learning activity ideas

Last year, over 3033 educators participated in the Take Me Outside for Learning Challenge and with your help, we are hoping to surpass this number and empower even more schools to take part.

The deadline for registration is October 20th! Join our very own St. David School who has already registered 8 classes!

Did we mention there are lots of amazing prizes up for grabs for teachers who participate in the Learning Challenge?

GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ Attempt Event 2021!

What do these three young men have in common?

They just submitted their video to smash a world record!

Skills Ontario is excited to announce a new GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS attempt event. We would like to invite everyone to participate in making history by helping them to break the record for Largest Online Video Chain of People Passing and Using a Screwdriver!

The call went out yesterday to Sudbury Catholic staff and students to help Skills Ontario. Both staff and students have been eagerly participating. Kent MacNeill, remote learning teacher assigned the challenge to all his grade 7 & 8 science students!

Anyone of any age, across the province can join the fun! Skills Ontario’s minimum goal is to receive 251 individual video submissions.

In order, to secure the record please make sure all guidelines are followed, refer to the Educational Guide & Attempt Guidelines and video. For additional information, refer to: Guinness World Record Attempt 2021

All participants must sign a photo/video release form when uploading their video. Participants 18 years and younger must have a parent/guardian sign the form.

All participants will be added into a draw for a chance to win 1 of 20 $50 prizes!

Deadline to submit is June 2^nd 2021!

St. David Students Take the Podium in Province Wide Contest!

The #SkillsAnywhereChallenge series is a fun way for Ontarian students of all ages to develop their skills and explore the skilled trades and technologies! On the first Monday of every month, Skills Ontario launches a new challenge that test students’ skills in creativity and planning. In the month of April, St. David students combined the fun of the challenge to create a school wide Wacky Hair Day Contest. Students from K-6 showed their creativity and talent with 3 students placing 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the provincial wide contest!

Students Participate in Skills Ontario Challenge

St. David’s grade 2/3 and 3/4 classes were eager this February to participate in the Skills Ontario challenge of building a snow structure outside. Students were able to show their teamwork and creativity by sketching out what they wanted their end product to look like outside and submit to Skill Ontario through Twitter to win a prize. The grade 2/3 class built our school mascot, The Snow Dragon and were able to work together on each intricate part, knowing their role in the making. The grade 3 class designed structural blueprints to build their strong and stable structures which resulted in a snow fort. Their experiential learning was taken to a whole new level, using different construction techniques and the natural environment around them. Needless to say our little dragons become “snow” engineers for the day!

Sudbury Catholic Schools Embrace Summer Learning!

Students at Sudbury Catholic Schools completed another year of summer learning this month! 60 students from Kindergarten to Grade 3 completed the three-week Summer Learning Program at St. David School from July 8 – July 26, 2019.

Students participated in a literacy and numeracy program, which supported students in improving their skills at their own pace. The program also featured various activities centered around Indigenous culture. The program was led by both classroom teachers and camp counsellors, providing a full educational team to participating students. Through the online tool and app Lexia, teachers and counsellors were able to provide a visual experience for both the literacy and numeracy components, and students are able to continue to access their account from home throughout the summer.

As in past years, each morning began with a physical activity which helped to energize students and build confidence so that they were ready to learn. This year, the group participated in Zumba sessions provided by Zumba Vibe.

The Board is thrilled with student participation in this year’s Summer Learning Program.

“The work and effort that goes into making the summer learning program a success each year is truly inspiring,” said Joanne Bénard, Director of Education at the Sudbury Catholic District School Board. “With the right tools, support and amazing staff, participating students were able to improve their skills and enjoy the experience along the way!”

The Summer Learning Program is a Ministry funded program which aims to promote literacy and numeracy learning for students during the summer months in fun and engaging ways.
