A heartfelt congratulations to the staff and students at St. Albert Adult Learning Centre for their outstanding leadership in mentoring junior students at St. David School for the Meaning of Home writing contest.

The St. Albert learners guided and inspired students to reflect on what “home” means to them, encouraging creativity and thoughtful expression. The resulting poems beautifully captured each student’s unique perspective, showcasing the power of words to convey emotion and connection. This collaboration between St. Albert and St. David School is a wonderful testament to the importance of mentorship, community, and shared learning.

We are also proud to recognize the students at St. Albert Adult Learning Centre as past recipients of the prestigious Michael Monk Award, which celebrates their dedication, perseverance, and commitment to academic and personal excellence. The impact of St. Albert’s programs extends beyond the classroom, providing individuals with opportunities to overcome challenges, achieve their goals, and contribute meaningfully to the community.

We encourage all students in Grades 4 to 6 to participate in the annual Meaning of Home writing contest for the chance to win one of three $30,000 grants for their local Habitat for Humanity. Additionally, for every local student submission, $10 will be donated to Habitat for Humanity, helping families build strength, stability, and independence.

Did you know that outdoor learning is a game-changer for young children? At St. David School, we believe in providing students with meaningful experiences that foster both learning and well-being. Our kindergarten students recently had an exciting opportunity to take their classroom outdoors, exploring nature while developing essential physical literacy skills.

Led by Mr. Atkinson, this engaging outdoor activity encouraged students to connect with the environment, stay active, and develop important skills such as creativity, problem-solving, and teamwork. Research shows that hands-on learning in natural settings enhances cognitive development, promotes physical health, and nurtures a lifelong appreciation for the world around us.

It’s kindergarten Time! The Sudbury Catholic District School Board invites families with children entering Kindergarten during the 2025/2026 school year to participate in the Kindergarten Registration Night on Thursday, January 23 from 4:30 – 6:30 p.m.

This is a drop-in event, where you can explore everything you need to know about starting kindergarten for your child. Meet our friendly staff, learn about our programs, and see why the Sudbury Catholic District School Board is the perfect place for your little one to grow and thrive.

In partnership with the Sudbury Food Bank, the Sudbury Catholic District School Board is proud to celebrate the success of St. Benedict Catholic Secondary School’s second annual Food Drive. This year, the school community, with help from Holy Cross and St. David Elementary Schools raised $28,056.70 and collected 2,100 cans to support individuals and families in need across the Sudbury region. This marks an increase of $6,552.83 from last year’s total of $21,503.95, highlighting the school’s continued dedication to giving back to the community.

The Food Drive, a cornerstone of St. Benedict’s holiday initiatives, reflects the school’s strong commitment to social justice. The Christmas season provides an opportunity to support local food banks, particularly during a time when the need is greater than ever. According to Food Banks Canada, March 2024 saw over 2 million visits to food banks nationwide, a record high underscoring the urgency of addressing food insecurity.

The Food Drive campaign ran from November 25 to December 11, featuring several impactful initiatives that brought the community together: 

• St. Benedict students prepared and served pasta dinners for families, students, and community members at St. Benedict and Holy Cross.
• St. Benedict students collected donations at Chris’ Your Independent Grocer and Messier’s Your Independent Grocer.
• St. Benedict’s fundraising team organized a class competition to raise funds, fostering teamwork and school spirit.
• Representative St. Benedict Bears also attended both Holy Cross and St. David Elementary schools for a pep rally, that energized their school partners to join forces in collecting monetary donations and non-perishable food items. 

“This initiative has given our students a chance to reflect on their blessings, connect with their community, and develop leadership skills through community service,” said Principal Beverley Belanger. “We are deeply grateful to all our contributors; this includes our students, staff, families, elementary schools, and, of course, our local partners, including Messier’s Your Independent Grocer, Chris’ Your Independent Grocer, Caruso Club, and Vito Brand Meats, whose support made this achievement possible.”

“I’m truly inspired by the way our school community came together to support those in need this year,” said David Akero, St. Benedict student and Sudbury Catholic District School Board Student Trustee. “The Food Drive showed us the importance of food banks and the meaningful accomplishments we can achieve by coming together as a community.”

St. David’s Core French students are spreading joy with their language skills this December! During this holiday season, students are creating Joyeux Noël cards to be distributed to a local Long-Term Care home to bring smiles to seniors.

What an excellent way to spread holiday cheer and bring smiles to different folks in the community. Joyeux Noël to all!

On Wednesday, November 27, students from Mrs. Trottier and Mr. Mailloux’s fifth grade social studies classes at St. David Catholic Elementary had the privilege of hosting Mayor Paul Lefebvre in their classroom as part of their studies on local government. 

Principal Dawn Wemigwans described the event as a truly unique experience for St. David Elementary. “Our students were delighted to meet Mayor Lefebvre, whose inspiring life journey and great sense of humour left a lasting impression. His words motivated and encouraged them, making it a memorable day filled with new learning and inspiration.” 

During his visit, Mayor Lefebvre shared his vision for the City of Greater Sudbury, discussed what inspired him to pursue a career in government, and provided insight into his responsibilities as the city’s leader. 

He then opened the floor to questions from the students, which ranged from “What is the hardest part of your job?” to “What is your favorite hockey team?” 

To conclude his visit, the students presented Mayor Lefebvre with a St. David’s T-shirt, officially welcoming him as an honorary Dragon.

Last week, the fifth graders at St. David Catholic Elementary School dove into the world of the skilled trades, and worked together in groups of five to build a set of hoverboards! From measuring and calculating in math to experimenting and problem-solving in science, they discovered how those essential skills weave seamlessly into their curriculum. 

We would like to extend a big thank you to Mr, Mailloux for his encouragement and passion for hands-on learning. Mr. Mailloux, who also has carpentry experience, came up with the idea while searching for Science, Technology, English and Math (STEM) projects.

These young minds are not just learning; they’re developing 21st-century skills like collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity!  Whether they’re building, designing, or communicating their ideas, our students are gaining the confidence and competencies they need for the future.

Did you know? Halloween originates from All Hallows’ Eve, the evening before All Saints’ Day, when Catholics honour those we acknowledge as Saints who have passed on to their heavenly home. Following this, on November 2, the Church observes All Souls Day to remember all the other faithful departed and offer prayers on their behalf for the Angels to lead them safely to their heavenly home.

St. David School recently hosted Joan Yawney-Matz, Religious Education and Faith Consultant for the Sudbury Catholic District School Board, to discuss the Catholic significance of Halloween. Joan engaged students in a presentation, highlighting the connections between Halloween, All Saints’ Day, and All Souls’ Day.

Her presentation focused on the importance of saints in the Catholic Faith, paying particular attention to St. David, the school’s namesake. Overall, the session enriched the class’s understanding of the holiday and deepened their appreciation for the saints who have preceded us.
