October 2, 2020 is National Custodial Appreciation Day! It is a day to thank and appreciate each and every member of our custodial team including custodians, assistant custodians, cleaners, BSTs and maintenance staff! We are especially grateful for their efforts in helping us to prepare for our school reopening, and for their ongoing diligence in keeping our schools and buildings clean. Your efforts are helping to keep us all safe.

On behalf of the Sudbury Catholic District School Board community, we are extremely thankful for all that you do. Let us take this opportunity to say thank you!

Every Child Matters: Sudbury Catholic Schools Honours Orange Shirt Day

Staff and students throughout the Sudbury Catholic District School Board joined hundreds of others across Canada by participating in Orange Shirt Day on Wednesday, September 30, 2020.

By wearing orange shirts, we recognize the harm the residential school system did to children’s sense of self-esteem and well-being and it serves as a symbol of our commitment to reconciliation. Since it began in 2013, the phrase “Every Child Matters” has been used as part of the movement to recognize the value of every child and for communities to come together.

“The Sudbury Catholic District School Board firmly believes that every child matters and as such we will continue to honour Orange Shirt Day year after year,” said Joanne Bénard, Director of Education. “We are committed to Truth and Reconciliation and we strive to find opportunities for our staff and students to come together in support of intercultural understanding, empathy, and mutual respect.”

Will you be one of June’s Contest Winners?

This month we are encouraging students to participate in the Daily Trivia Challenge from June 8th – June 19th,2020.

There are two category groups:
Elementary (Kindergarten to Grade 6)-Home Scavenger Hunt: Entry Form
and
Secondary (Grade 7 – Grade 12)- Skilled Trades Trivia Game : Entry Form

Each day, a trivia question or clue will be shared via social media encouraging students to record the answer or take the appropriate photo. There will be 10 days in total. Students will then submit all 10 correct answers on the appropriate Google Form on June 19th for a chance to win a prize.

Winners will be announced on social media on Monday June 22nd!

We’re proud to announce the launch of the 2020 Summer Camp Online Program!

Are you excited for summer? We are! We are happy to announce the SCDSB 2020 Summer Camp expanded online program. Please click the link and fill in a survey for each of your children you would like to take part in the opportunity. You will need to commit to be part of the program for 3 weeks: two hours a day. July 6-24th, 9am to 11am.

Our expanded online learning includes K-8 online classes, K-8 ELL classes (for our newcomers) and Indigenous Learning.

Sessions include Internet Safety, Supporting Students Through the COVID-19 Pandemic, Google Classroom: The Parent Connection, Mental Health & Wellbeing, Learning About the Dangers of Human Trafficking, French as a Second Language Supports, Reading supports through Lexia, and Reading and Writing!

St. David School Celebrates Students During Catholic Education Week

During
Catholic Education week, we need to count on the faith within us and believe
that our school community will support one another and work together to promote
the faith in others. Hope brings us closer together during these challenging
times and allows us to reflect on what is important in life. During the month
of May we celebrate the virtue of empathy, which allows us to continue to build
relationships with our families and school community partners.

In light of
Catholic Education week, St. David School felt their students should be
recognized and celebrated for their efforts in giving back to their school
community in various ways. The students selected received a $100.00 PC gift
card for their random acts of kindness, leadership and inspiration, which was virtually
displayed on their online learning platforms and social media. These students
ignite hope in their classmates, peers, teachers and families as they display
their sheer motivation to persevere even when times get tough, like this
pandemic crisis we are all facing.I
would like to thank PC Loblaw’s for giving St. David School the flexibility and
opportunity to celebrate our students and families during this difficult time
of Covid-19. I would also like to highlight our Educational Assistants for
making this day possible for our students. Without your genuine care, love and
kindness, this opportunity for giving back would not have happened without you.

Sudbury Catholic Students Spread Kindness to Seniors this Mother’s Day

Students at Sudbury Catholic Schools participated in a
challenge that was posted by Goshenite Seniors Services to create 500 Mother’s
Day cards for seniors in the Sudbury area.

Not being in a physical classroom didn’t stop Mrs. Cimino
and her Grade 1 students at St. David School from coming together to help Goshenite
Seniors Services.

“It is especially important during these difficult times to
provide students with authentic opportunities for them to act as caring and
responsible citizens,” said Mrs. Cimino.

Milena Raso, a grade 11 student at Marymount Academy is
currently enrolled in the Specialized High Skills Major for Non-Profit
Industry. She too jumped at the opportunity to bring positivity to members of
our community.

“I am very blessed to have my grandmother living with me and
listening to her stories about not having technology and other modern-day
conveniences. It shows me how life has changed. Hearing it first-hand, rather
than from reading it in a textbook makes it much more real to me. I think it’s
important for youth to be more active in caring for our elders and realize that
we have a lot to learn from them,” she explained.

Cards will be sent directly to Goshenite Seniors Services who will distribute
them over the weekend.

In response to the CONVID-19 virus, Dr. David Williams, Ontario’s Chief Medical Officer of Health advised all 72 Ontario School Boards to close their schools from March 14 – April 5, 2020 to ensure the safety and well-being of students and staff. While our schools are closed, we are committed to keep you informed.

Learn at Home Portal

The Ministry of Education has launched a new online platform to
help students continue learning while schools are closed. While these materials
do not replace what students have been learning at school, during this unusual
time, these at-home activities offer quick and easy access to resources for students
from Kindergarten to Grade 12.

Elementary
resources are designed to help young students learn at home with interactive
activities that encourage participation through entertaining and stimulating
digital content. High school content was designed with a focus on STEM courses
and ensure core competencies and skills are reinforced.
